Well folks, it’s been a little over a month since we went live with the new ChangingAging Blogstream and Bill Thomas and I thought it’s time for us to check in with our readers.
This being a blog, we already check-in with you everyday and hope to get your feedback. However, we recently noticed that since we launched the new design last month we have been receiving fewer reader comments despite increasing web traffic and social network activity, so we’re beginning to wonder if something is amiss.
Up until April, ChangingAging.org was receiving 75-100 comments per month. Since we launched the redesign six weeks ago we’ve only received 30 comments.
Now, there is a very plausible explanation for this drop off. We didn’t just redesign ChangingAging.org, we radically re-envisioned the site and created an entirely new platform. Many of our longtime readers are probably still trying to figure out what’s going on. Not only are there new feature — such as signing up for your own blog or submitting your blog to the Blogstream — there is a ton more awesome pro-aging content to choose from. We have over 50 contributors signed up to blog on the ChangingAging Blogstream, which translates into 10-20 posts per day and growing.
Naturally, when you begin offering your readers dozens of compelling reasons to exit your website and read someone else’s awesome content you should be prepared to see reader engagement drop.
We went into this fully prepared to take that risk.
We strongly believed there was a dearth of voices in the blogosphere talking about aging in a meaningful and positive way. And we believed we saw an opportunity to support those already blogging about aging and to help new voices join the conversation.
In short, we believed this effort would help dramatically grow the changing aging community. The numbers tell us we’re on the right path; but we feel like the conversation has yet to bear fruit.
So here’s your chance — What to do you think of the ChangingAging Blogstream so far? Who are your favorite Blogstream bloggers? If you’re part of the Blogstream, is your site getting more traffic? Is your site stealing all of our commenters!?! 🙂
And most importantly, please tell us what we can do to make the experience better.
The Blogstream is a work in progress and we have many exciting new features under works, such as customizable home page feeds and enhanced reader feedback on posts.
Your feedback will greatly assist us in deciding how and when to roll those features out, so please join the conversation below.
