Transforming Culture: Eden Alternative at Home Come learn about the Eden Alternative’s newest initiative, Eden at Home! In a dynamic learning environment, explore how cultural perceptions of aging, disability and caregiving exacerbate the three plagues of loneliness, helplessness, and boredom in the lives of Elders living at home (in the community or at an independent or assisted living community) and in those who collaborate in their care. Lean how to promote a culture of meaningful care that does not see the needs of caregivers as separate from the needs of care receivers, but rather advocates for the well-being of the whole care partnership. This is an excellent foundational workshop about the call for culture change in home and community-based living, and would be appropriate for anyone who partners in the care of Elders, including the person him/herself. Objectives: (3 hours) 1) Understand why shifting perceptions around aging, elderhood and disability is a fundamental first step to reframing genuine care. 2) Discern between the concept of care partnership and care giving/care receiving. 3) Identify and describe the impact of the three plagues of loneliness, helplessness and boredom on Elders and those partnering in their care at home or in an independent or assisted living community. 4) Explore how empowered care partner teams can create a “Human Habitat” to enhance the well-being of Elders and the entire care partnership team.
