The Eden Alternative will host the first ever Neighborhood Development Guide training March 19 to 23 in Denver to support development of the neighborhood/household model in nursing homes and other long term care settings.
The training is designed for Eden Educators, who will attend from across the country, and is focused on preparing them to return to their facilities and teach managers and other leaders how to successfully lead household teams and build neighborhoods.
The Neighborhood/Household models are distinguished by small groups of elders and care partners living within a physically-defined environment within a nursing home that honors the daily rhythm of each individual. Employee care partners are consistently assigned so they can develop meaningful relationships with the elder care partners and work as a strong directed team. The models require changes in organizational practices, physical environments, new care partner structures and development of strong, caring relationships at all levels.
Creating, growing and sustaining neighborhood/household teams has been a struggle to many on the culture change journey. What we have learned is the success of an empowered team is based largely on the skills and knowledge of the person leading them. There has been too little resources and tools provided to ensure success in building strong, caring empowered teams. This new offering, we hope, will be the answer.
The Neighborhood Development Guide curriculum created by Pinon management and licensed to The Eden Alternative contains 30 education modules that focus on:
- Identifying and discussing the new roles leaders/managers will play as Neighborhood Guides;
- Developing group facilitation skills;
- Providing knowledge of how empowered work teams develop; and
- Providing self-assessment tools and live observation of the modules they will deliver to their Neighborhood teams.
