Hello! My name is Andrea Sullivan and I breed Siberian cats. It is more or less a hobby; I am actually a teacher by profession. My husband Mark and I decided to import Siberians from Russia and start a small little cattery in our home in Idaho.
Why are Siberian cats so special and why in the world would I create a blog for the ChangingAging blogosphere you ask? Well, I was inspired by two books, Dewey the Library Cat & Making Rounds with Oscar: The Extraordinary Gift of an Ordinary Cat. In both books a cat transformed the atmosphere and deeply impacted and enhanced life for everyone they encountered: caregivers, patients, staff, and visitors. I believe many more care homes would consider having a pet cat if it weren’t for the fact that patients, visitors, or staff may in fact be allergic to felines. Siberians are a rare breed of cat that possess hypoallergenic qualities, have a dog like personality, and love to be around people. They will fetch, play in water, follow you everywhere, and generally want to be where the action is. They are loyal, affectionate, and very brave.
Our first Siberian, Ledenets (pictured in the blog header), travelled over 20 hours by plane to get to us and actually came out of the cat carrier purring and completely at ease. One rare cat indeed, most cats would hide for weeks after such a seemingly traumatic experience, not Leddy. He isn’t the only one either. All three of our Siberians have the same temperament and nature. Their easygoing personalities along with their hypoallergenic qualities make them the perfect addition to elder care homes, Eden’s most especially. Siberians may become the favorite pastime to eliminate boredom. It is quite easy to pass several hours watching their antics. Our female Belle will retrieve her little cat ball up to twenty times in a row. No need to bend down and pick up the ball either, she will jump onto your lap and drop the ball in your hand. Almost everyone who visits our small cattery is amazed by these felines, never before experiencing a cat who indeed behaves more like a dog. Many dog lovers are won over by their demeanor and good nature.
So, it is my vision to see Siberians in Eden, thus enhancing life for all who work in such a lovely place.
