Florida Panhandle homes recently hosted their first intergenerational olymics! Typically the region hosts a “senior” olympics for area homes to compete in but this year wanted to take it one step further. They thought it would be fun to invite a local classsroom to participate alongside the Elders in the games! Elders and children loved the opportunity to not only spend time together but to cheer each other on in the variety of games offered to both age groups.
So many times in long term care we “parade” children through the home on Easter, Halloween and Christmas to pass out gifts or receive prizes from our Elders but rarely do we look beyond that normal for intergenerational programming. It is so vital that opportunities to form true intergenerational relationships are provided for both Elders and children because they are so valuable to everyone involved.
