Yesterday my mother was almost a victim of financial elder abuse. I made this video explaining how these insidious scammers targeted my mother. If you are caring for aging parents, you really MUST make a point of educating them about all the different ways that these criminals prey on the elderly.
First and foremost they strike an emotional place that they know will resonate with the elder, and then all logic goes out the window. The elder is no longer able to make rational decisions. Once the scammer detects an ounce of vulnerability, they make their move. This is when they ask for credit card information, cash, money wired to an account to “save a stranded grandchild who is scared,” or any number of other tactics to grab their money.
I have no idea how these criminals work. I have no idea how they find someone’s private information. (I have no idea how they sleep at night, but apparently they do.) The truth is that nothing is private anymore and we have to protect our loved ones and ourselves. If you have not educated your parents or any other aging relative on the reality of Elder Abuse, you need to do it immediately. I’m proud to say that The Care Company has created really thorough, important information about this topic on our site www.empoweredcare.com.
Please take this seriously.
