I grew up knowing that my mom had been abused by my grandfather. I knew it, yes. But we never talked about it. We grew up knowing life is complicated. Love is complicated. And most importantly, family secrets are supposed to be kept quiet.
Depression does not need to be a normal part of aging. It’s up to all of us to acknowledge—and address—the risk.
In the past, many have focused on the overall lack of senior housing to be the major crisis facing our nation. But I’d argue the crisis isn’t just a lack of senior housing; it’s a lack of housing that people can actually afford.
The feeling of loneliness and isolation people are facing is not simply due to aging—it’s due to our society’s lack of value for older adults. There is a cultural shift that we need to start working toward.
