Mark your calendars to join us for a live broadcast of RealCareNowTV on Tuesday, Jan. 25 at 11:30 a.m. EST. Dr. Bill Thomas will be joined by our friend Dr. Al Power for a provocative ethical discusion about early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.
McKnight’s Long Term Care News reported today that the FDA voted to approve a brainscan that can effectively identify the beta amyloid plaques that characterize Alzheimer’s in living persons. This and other techniques make it possible to diagnos Alzheimer’s years, if not decades, before traditional symptoms are apparent. The New York Times recently posed this question:
But the new diagnostic tests are leading to a moral dilemma. Since there is no treatment for Alzheimer’s, is it a good thing to tell people, years earlier, that they have this progressive degenerative brain disease or have a good chance of getting it?
