I don’t want to sensationalize what sounds like a horrible situation, but I live in Baltimore and am getting first-hand text messages and Twitter updates regarding the shooting of a doctor at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Two close friends of mine are interning at Hopkins and are currently in lockdown.
Justin Fenton of the Baltimore Sun is on the scene and has this report. Fenton reports that a nurse who witnessed the shooting said a man who was disgruntled with his mother’s spine surgery threatened to jump out an 8th story window before pulling a gun and shooting his mother’s doctor. The Baltimore Police just reported on Twitter that the suspect has not yet been subdued.
I’ll avoid comment on this terrible situation until the details are clear.
UPDATE: The shooting victim’s injuries are not life threatening and he is expected to make a full recovery.
UPDATE: According to multiple reports on Twitter from the news media the police have shot and killed the suspected shooter at Johns Hopkins Hospital. As CNNLive on Twitter puts it:
Police: Situation contained after gunman fatally shot by police.
Not much to say until we know the mental health of the man the police just killed. But it has the makings of a terrible tragedy and failure of care on multiple fronts.
