Generally speaking, mass media outlets are not inclined to offer much time or attention to pro-aging stories. Successful use of mass media gives people a warm fuzzy feeling because it generates big numbers. “Two million people saw our story!!!!” A better strategy involves learning how to tell and share our own stories with the people who care about our issue. Quality stories that readers can connect to intellectually and emotionally are the coin of the internet realm.

A recent initiative by Minnesota-based Ecumen has demonstrated that Alzheimer’s and dementia patients can be taken off antipsychotic drugs with no objective evidence of worsening behavioral distress.
That Pesky Iron Law
Aging is mandatory and, in all of human history, not one person has every grown young. On a national scale, the aging of populations proceeds with mathematical precision. Demographers have made and continue to make very accurate estimations of how old the American public was and will be at different points in time. This unbreakable law will soon lead to a collision between an aging Post War generation and the youth-obsessed society they brought into being.

Re-Thinking Dove Pro-Aging
Although I was complementary to the Dove campaign when it first ran, it now seems much less impressive to me. The problem here is that although we “know” that aging has its own intrinsic merits, these virtues are impossible to photograph. I am still waiting for a promotional campaign that can capture in a realistic and positive way, the depth and integrity that lie at the heart of aging.
