Author Bio
William H. Thomas was born in Tioga County, New York, and is the author of five previous books and two plays. Thomas’ most recent book, What Are Old People For? draws on sources as diverse as evolutionary biology, Shakespearean sonnets, and Greek philosophy to make the case that elders belong in the heart of society.
After graduating from Harvard Medical School, Thomas spent 18 years living “off-the-grid” on a wind- and solar-powered organic farm in upstate New York. The prequel to this novel, In the Arms of Elders, tells the fictional autobiographical story of the Thomas’ journey to the land of Kallimos and the origins of The Eden Alternative.
A visionary and internationally renowned expert on aging, Thomas is an Ashoka Fellow and winner of the Heinz Award for the Human Condition. In partnership with his wife Judith Meyers-Thomas, he created The Eden Alternative, an international nonprofit, and The Green House Project, both models to revolutionize nursing home care.
Thomas is a geriatrician, musician, professor, and public speaker. He now resides in Ithaca, New York with his wife, three sons, and two daughters.
