Senior Services Winston-Salem is one of the nation’s largest broad-based non-profits serving elders to undergo a company-wide transformation in its culture through Eden at Home, with the goal of enhancing the quality of life of the older people they serve.
A core belief of The Eden Alternative is that all decisions belong to the Elders or those closest to them.
One of the things that keeps me working in the aging services field is the camaraderie of my colleagues. They demonstrate a tremendous commitment to and appreciation for Elders and their care partners, an awareness of the Elders’ stories as sacred treasures to be held by us with care, and an intuition that the health […]

Life coach Martha Beck’s new book, Finding Your Way in a Wild New World, captures the key qualities of what she calls a “Wayfinder.” Wayfinders, by her definition, look a lot like culture change advocates to me. Beck describes Wayfinders as individuals driven by an authentic instinct to follow a specific path, with the goal of healing their world by discovering and embracing their own true nature. Culture changers across the care continuum often share stories of having experienced a deep, inner calling to “do what’s right” and begin seeing and addressing care through new eyes, in spite of the odds or barriers they face.
On March 12, 2012, Dr. Bill Thomas and 186 culture change advocates gathered at the The Brookwood Community in Brookshire, Texas to share in a movement to transform the culture of care regardless of where people live. The day was filled with great food, great stories, and great new friends! We are pleased with the event’s […]
The 4th Annual AHCA/NCAL Quality Symposium was a powerful reminder that The Eden Alternative has resources to help American Health Care Association members meet their quality goals in long term care. “Some is not a number and soon is not a time,” was a common theme emphasized at the Houston event in February. It reminds […]
When you think of culture change in long term care you usually think of efforts to deinstitutionalize big nursing homes, not private homes. After all, if The Eden Alternative® and The Green House® Project models are designed to make long-term-care facilities more “home-like”, why would you need culture change in a real home? In fact, […]
The Eden Alternative family knows Laura Beck as the Learning and Development Guide who helped pioneer Eden at Home, which applies the 10 principles of the Eden Alternative to home and community-based care.
Last Friday Laura was featured on Alzheimer’s Speaks Radio with Lori La Bey where she discussed her personal journey as the daughter of an elder living with dementia and her discovery of person-directed care through the Eden Alternative.
The Eden Alternative mission extends past the walls of the nursing home and can be embraced by home and community-based caregivers through the innovative “Eden at Home” initiative. Eden at Home captures the essence and successes of the Eden Alternative’s Ten Principles as they apply to improving quality of life for elders living at home and […]

On Thursday, July 14th at 1:00 p.m. ET, the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America’s Care Connection will feature Laura Beck from the Eden Alternative Home Office for “Care Partnership: Breathing New Life into the Giving & Receiving of Care.” As a concept, “care partnership” promotes a culture of meaningful care that does not see the needs of caregivers as separate from […]
