What is the ChangingAging Blogstream? Who is it for and what is its purpose?
I believe the Blogstream is going to play an important role in the future of aging in America.
I’ve been working for several decades to dramatically reform long term care. I’m proud of my success building the global Eden Alternative movement to bring culture change to nursing homes and the Green House Project to create real home environments that deliver skilled nursing care. I’m proud to be part of a broader culture change movement that is revolutionizing not just the nation’s long term care industry, but society’s view of aging itself.
I believe the movement to usher in a new old age stands at a crossroads. Ahead lies a vast, seemingly insurmountable challenge — the aging of nearly 80 million baby boomers. How do we as a society deal with the largest generation of humans in history to successfully grow old?
Down one path lies the status quo — Declinism. We can continue to treat old age as a downward spiral of human worth, as a burden and an impending crisis threatening our society. The institutional care we’ve been working so hard to abolish will remain the norm and culture change the exception.
But there is another path — the new old age. Society can relearn to embrace old age and return elderhood to its rightful place as the pinnacle of the human life cycle. We can relearn what we’ve forgotten — that there is growth after adulthood, that there is value in wisdom and beauty in being rather than doing.
It is my belief the culture change movement will not truly be successful until we change the way society views aging. To do that, we need your help.
Over the past few years Kavan Peterson and I have been blogging about aging and looking around the internet for other pro-aging voices. We’ve found that within the mainstream media pro-aging content does not stand a chance. The mainstream media is permeated with ageist, youth-centric, anti-aging messages and products that drown out what few pro-aging voices exist.
We decided there was a need to create a new community using social media to bring together real pro-aging voices and people and ideas dedicated to changing the way we think about aging.
The ChangingAging Blogstream is the first step. The Blogstream is a network of pro-aging blogs that brings together people and ideas and uses social media to communicate a new vision of old age.
Ho can you get involved? It’s easy. Join up — you can get a free blog now or we can help you build a custom blog for your organization. If you already have a blog, you can submit it to the Blogstream and reach a larger audience of people interested in creating a better old age.
When you connect your blog to the ChangingAging Blogstream, you will contribute to a growing stream of pro-aging voices and messages.
I believe this community, this effort, this ChangingAging Blogstream has the power to change aging forever.
