I am honored to be invited to lead a day-long conference near Houston March 12 on “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness — Transforming the Culture of Long Term Care,” that I believe will set Texas on the path to becoming a national culture change leader.
This is not your typical LTC conference. In partnership with The Eden Alternative, Texas Culture Change Coalition and our host The Brookwood Community, this experience will bring together every stakeholder and will open the door to culture change transforming the entire continuum of care in Texas from skilled nursing to community and home-based care to adults living with disabilities.
In recent years, The Eden Alternative has entered a new chapter in its evolution by taking the essence of the culture change philosophy that has been transforming institutional nursing homes for two decades and expanding to address home and community-based care and the care of people living with cognitive and developmental disabilities. It has done this through the creation of the Eden at Home and Eden LifeLong Living programs.
Now Texas, who for decades lagged behind every other state in deinstitutionalizing care for adults with cognitive disabilities, is pioneering the movement with organizations such as the Seaton Foundation who partnered with Eden to develop Eden LifeLong Living and registered the first Eden home for adults with developmental disabilities in Austin in 2009.
True culture change leaves no one behind. It relies on the involvement of everyone in all long-term care environments. This March 12 in Texas I will be joining administrators, executive directors, home health and hospice caregivers, social workers, nursing directors, adult recreation and social service directors, therapists, community organizers, care partners, family members, elders, adults with developmental disabilities and anyone else devoted providing life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all people, no matter their age and ability.
