The movement to change the culture of nursing homes was born in Rochester, New York, the site of the first Green House in the country and now the first community in the country to take a leadership role in educating consumers to create the kind of demand that will encourage traditional nursing homes to become part of the culture-change movement.
During May, which has been designated as Older Americans Month, the Lifespan of Greater Rochester will offer a series of workshops, led by nationally recognized experts, exploring dementia and caregiving. More than 5 million people in this country are affected by dementia, and “Take It on For Mom” is designed to educate families to the need to become advocates for better and more effective treatment of the condition in nursing homes.
