Love your pets? So does Pickett Care and Rehabilitation located in Byrdstown, TN.
I can’t imagine moving to a different home without my labradoodle. He has become quite the companion to me over the past few years! Unfortunately many seniors moving into long term care facilities are forced to abandon their pets behind without even a thought as to where they will go or who will care for them. This is simply not the case at Pickett.
They made the decision when they admitted an Elder recently who just couldn’t imagine the idea of living without his dog. The leadership team came together and decided to work out a plan in which the dog could actually move into the home with the Elder.
I am convinced we can do so many things, if we only take the leap to start it. Challenging ourselves is part of our growth. We may fail but failing doesn’t always mean not succeeding. In fact, many times, by failing we pave the road to success more clearly.
Eden Alternative Principle #2 discusses the idea of creating a human habitat. A place where growth abounds and people can nurture those things they love. This is a prime example of how one Elder in one home will be able to continue a life long relationship with his dog. His purpose, his identity, and his joy all remain intact as he transitions in his new home. That’s the way it should be.
