Geriatrician Dr. William Thomas developed the Green House Project in 2003, aiming to redesign nursing homes from the ground up to give their residents more respect, privacy and control over their schedules. Twenty years ago, he and his wife, Jude Thomas, founded the nonprofit Eden Alternative with the goal of changing the culture of nursing homes.

Debuting in New York April 18, 2012, Alive Inside tells a story of hope and beauty in places where they are hard to find – nursing homes caring for the oldest and most frail. “This is one of the first films to take a hard look at why emptiness and loneliness invade and pervade old age in modern life,” said Bill Thomas, one of the experts featured in the film.

Last summer Al Power called me to tell me about a film maker who wanted to explore the connection between life, art, music and aging. I jumped at the chance to to meet up with them at St. John’s and we spent a day there talking about ideas and doing some taping.
The film maker’s name is Michael Rossato-Bennett and his production company, Ximotion Media, had undertaken the challenge of explaining how and why access to music could help people come “Alive Inside.”

Jewish Home Lifecare has received approval from the New York City Planning Commission to build a new, high-rise nursing home on Manhattan’s West 97th Street overcoming a major hurdle to the project. The project will follow the model established by the Green House Project, a national effort to de-institutionalize nursing homes and make them more homelike.
