One of the ChangingAging Blogstream’s newest feed contributors is Sally Abrahms, who recently became AARP’s top blogger on family caregiving issues. AARP, recognizing that more of its members than ever before are facing the responsibility of caring for an aging loved one, is reorganizing much of its print and web publications to focus on addressing the questions and needs of family caregivers.
Abrahms has long written on aging and boomers for AARP, as well as TIME, Newsweek, The New York Times, and the Huffington Post, and she brings both personal and professional experience to the family caregiving beat.
Like many Blogstream contributors who write about caregiving, Abrahms has spent recent years caring for her 91-year-old mother, who recently died, and is now caring for her 92-year-old mother-in-law.
Abrahms said her professional experience reporting on aging and caregiving has helped her negotiate the challenging transition from daughter to caregiver for her aging parents. In her blogging for AARP, Abrahms focuses on delivering the most important news, trends, studies and innovative ideas related to family caregiving.
“AARP wants to ramp up their caregiving coverage because they realize that so many boomers are being thrust into the position of caregiver for their spouses and parents,” Abrahms said.
Abrahms also writes longer feature stories on caregiving for AARP Bulletin and she has shared some of her personal experiences on caregiving in her Huffington Post articles and personal blog (both of which are now syndicated through the ChangingAging Blogstream). But as part of AARP’s growing team of bloggers, Abrahms is focused on providing brief, succinct and relevant blog posts highlighting the latest news and resources related to caregiving.
“In magazine articles I was able to elaborate on a lot of ideas and write in depth, but in blogging I try to just highlight the most important information and resources and provide useful links and tips,” Abrahms said.
