The Thomas Plan

I attended a public rally in support of health care reform. I was hoping to encounter some of the hysterical opponents of reform so I could examine them in real life but it was not to be. All of the people in attendance already supported robust levels of reform.

As we were leaving, people were talking about speech that Obama will be giving on the 9th.  I got to thinking about the speech that I would give. Here it is…

Mumbo jumbo nice nice distinguished guests et cetera.

Here is my plan.  First, The American people will be eligible to join the Federal Employees Health Exchange.  That’s right, the people who elected us to office will also qualify for the same health insurance we have.  Second,  enrollment in Medicare, regardless of age, will be one of the options available to choose from in the health care exchange.  My plan  can be boiled done to 10 pages, it can be understood by anyone, it is fair, it provides competitive pressure as well as universal coverage.

To the people who will oppose my plan, I urge you to stand before your constituents and explain to them why they can not have the kind of insurance coverage that you have.

To the health insurance companies, I  say, let’s see some of that legendary competitive American business mojo in action. Surely, you will be able to out-compete and out-perform the lowly government-run Medicare program.

Let the wild rumpus begin!

This imaginary speech provides pretty clear evidence that I will never be President of the United States.  But it also makes the point that this can and should be made as simple as possible.

Bill, I quoted/posted your Obama speech at firedoglake.

You'll also never be Obama's health care advisor or political advisor. Unfortunately. This whole thing has been incredibly botched, either inadvertently or for the benefit of the drug and insurance corporations, or both. Medicare is well-known, understandable, and popular. That should be the starting point.

Maybe we should all tweet The Thomas Plan to Barack! I'm really hoping the Pres can get the message across on the 9th - sweet and simple! : )

Your speech says it all---without spin.
