Kirkhaven on Rochester’s Alexander Street is part of what’s called a “culture change”. Kirkhaven is moving from the more institutionalized like nursing home setting and into a more home-like atmosphere called the Eden Alternative.
This week more than 25 health care professionals are learning what it takes to train staff to rethink the way they work. This method of care is based on the person building relationships, companionship, variety and spontaneity.
“In that model people are at the center of life and that is what this training is about how do we put elders back in the center of life where daily life can evolve around their schedules and their independence can be fostered”, said Susan Berta, a Eden Alternative educator.
