Learning from the Brits – Part II
The BBC produces a host of good TV-series, many of them quintessentially
British, one of my favorites is MI5 – Spooks, a series about the British
Great dialogues, witty language, civilized language, no
swearing, no F-words, great acting, no botoxed faces, a great mix of
characters, half of the spies are women, the crew is of British and
equally, of Asian or African descent. Addictive!
And there is Conny James, 65 plus, a retired spy who has
been ordered back to the headquarters – the Grid – an old actress playing a
female spy who has seen it all, the cold war, old and new enemies and who
masters new technology brilliantly. It is worth watching the character, how
she is respected and how she interacts with the younger actors, how she uses
her “invisibility” of an older woman to get what she wants and to protect
Britain – unthinkable in other series around the globe. Only the Brits do
that, and I admire them for this.
