The fellow pictured in the image below has been a popular entertainer for a long time. I stumbled on a news story about him recently (he is releasing his new album exclusively through Target stores) and that got me thinking about his age.
Not too long ago it would have been hard to imagine a 50 year old man looking like this. The reason I bring it up is that people aged 50 and above should not be expected to conform their physical appearance according to tightly compartmentalized and ages specific expectations. The second half of our lives ought to bring more flexibility and freedom as far as one’s appearance goes. That said, I should emphasize that rock stars have always been given quite a bit of latitude in this area (see Bowie, David). Also, it is clear that the people who are most harmed by these constrains are older women.
Have you ever heard the condescending and tartly judgmental phrase, “mutton dressed as lamb?” These words are rarely, if ever, applied to men.
We can actually all get a bit of benefit when a AARP card carrying musician is willing to push the age envelope.
By the way, Prince turns 51 this summer.
