Every day I scan through dozens of headlines with variations of the theme “elderly man” victim of this and “elderly woman” victim of that. It’s no wonder that society views “elderly” as synonymous with “victim.”
Excuse my language, but that’s just bullshit.
As a former journalist it drives me nuts — it’s just plain lazy and offensive. Journalists are supposed to know better than to use pejorative adjectives to describe an entire demographic. If the age of a person is relevant, do some reporting and use the person’s age.
Of course, there are exceptions to the elderly=victimhood theme. However, I still decry the unnecessary use of adjectives:
Super gran: ElderlyWoman batters sledgehammer raiders with handbag
A handbag swinging woman in a red coat has apparently fought off robbers armed with sledgehammers during a raid on a jewellery store.
The video says it all. This WOMAN is my hero.
